Phosphogypsum stack in Turnu Măgurele: what can we learn from scientific literature

On the left bank of the Danube, a few kilometres from the town of Turnu Măgurele, sits one of Romania’s largest phosphogypsum (PG) deposits: roughly 68,5 hectares of stacks left behind by decades of phosphate-fertiliser production. It is one of four historic PG deposits in the country and one of only two that have not yet been closed or remediated.

Kutina Citizen Event: Reimagining the Future of the phosphogypsum stack

On 26 May 2026, citizens and representatives of public bodies and research organisations gathered in Kutina, Croatia, for the citizen workshop “Voices for change: exploring solutions for the Kutina stack”. Kutina has a unique relationship with phosphogypsum. For many residents, the history of the stack is inseparable from the history of Petrokemija, the industrial complex that helped shape the city’s economy and identity. Through a participatory discussion and future-oriented exercises, participants reflected on this legacy, explored current challenges, and imagined pathways towards new solutions for the PG stack.

Integrated Summary of Scientific Studies on the Prahovo PG Stack

The Prahovo PG stack in Serbia is not an immediate radiation emergency, but it is clearly an environmental hot spot that requires careful management. Some pathways are being tested, like purification by recrystallization, or the ones in FICFighters, to produce usable by-products pointing to both environmental challenges and opportunities for safe material recovery.

What is Phosphogypsum?

What is Phosphogypsum?

Phosphogypsum, a fertilizer industry by-product, contains naturally occurring radionuclides like uranium and radium. Its radioactivity varies based on source materials, requiring strict controls before any reuse in construction or agriculture.

Phosphogypsum in Kutina: what do we really know?

In this post, we bring together what 15 years of scientific research tells us about the phosphogypsum (PG) stack at Kutina — Croatia’s only legacy of this kind, and one of the lesser-known phosphogypsum deposits in Europe. Between 1983 and 2009, the fertiliser company...
