Targeting 5 industries: batteries, packaging, construction, detergents, and fertilizers.
The FIC-Fighters project (Fair, Inclusive, Circular, and Healthy cities: Valorisation of phosphogypsum wastes into commercial products through sustainable and circular processes) is a 48-month initiative funded by the European Commission, that started on 1 June 2024.
FIC-Fighters aims to demonstrate a circular and systemic solution for regenerating phosphogypsum (PG) stacks in Europe. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across seven European sites, the project is dedicated to transforming PG waste into valuable resources that support sustainable urban regions and reduce environmental impacts.
The project addresses the pressing need for sustainable waste management by leveraging circular economy principles. FIC-Fighters specifically targets the valorisation of PG waste in key sectors, including batteries, packaging, construction, detergents, and fertilisers. The project brings together stakeholders from diverse industries and regions, creating a collaborative network that drives innovation and supports more sustainable European cities.

expected Impact
FIC-Fighters aims to:
Enhance Urban Sustainability
By converting phosphogypsum waste into valuable resources, the project supports cleaner cities and reduces industrial waste.
Promote Circular Economy Practices
Influence Policy and Regulation
By demonstrating the environmental and economic benefits of PG valorisation, the project aims to inform European policies on waste management and sustainable resource use.
expected results
The FIC-Fighters project is set to deliver impactful results across several key areas, driving innovation in the circular economy and supporting sustainable urban development:
Over 48 months, in collaboration with the CCRI, we will:
New Applications for Phosphogypsum
Develop and demonstrate novel uses for PG waste across various sectors, including construction, fertilisers, and detergents. This includes creating market-ready products and materials that integrate PG as a sustainable resource.
Environmental and Economic Benefits:
Showcase reductions in waste and carbon emissions by turning PG into valuable resources, contributing to cleaner cities and supporting EU environmental goals.
Industry and Policy Impact
Provide actionable insights and recommendations for industry stakeholders and policymakers, aiding in the adoption of circular economy practices within the EU.
Community of Practice (CoP)
Establish a network for professionals and researchers to exchange knowledge on PG valorisation, promoting ongoing collaboration and capacity building in sustainable waste management.
European Exploitation Portal (PEPE):
Launch a comprehensive platform to facilitate access to research findings, best practices, and resources related to PG, benefiting businesses, researchers, and the public.
The project brings together a diverse consortium of industry, research, and policy partners from across Europe, each contributing unique expertise.
