On 4 March 2026, citizens, environmental advocates, researchers, institutional representatives, and other local stakeholders gathered in Negotin, Serbia, for the FIC-Fighters citizen event. Although the phosphogypsum (PG) stack is located in the nearby little village of Prahovo, the workshop took place in Negotin — the municipality to which Prahovo belongs — to encourage wider community participation and dialogue.
On the banks of the Danube River in eastern Serbia, Prahovo is a small industrial town belonging to Negotin municipality shaped by an active large chemical production complex. The local industrial ecosystem is strongly linked to phosphoric acid production and related by-products, including phosphogypsum (PG).
Barreiro carries a proud industrial past shaped by factories and decades of work that built both livelihoods and identity. But alongside that history lies another legacy: vast deposits of phosphogypsum left behind by phosphate production, still marking the landscape and raising unanswered questions about safety, responsibility and restoration.
The second FIC-FIGHTERS Citizen Event: “Voices for Change: exploring solutions for the Barreiro stack,” took place on the11 November 2025, where citizens and local stakeholders gathered at the Public Library of Barreiro (Portugal). This workshop created a space for dialogue about the legacy of the local phosphogypsum (PG) stack, often remembered as “Monte Branco” or the “White Hills” among the locals.
