New Modular Laboratory Inaugurated at Universidad de Sevilla

The FIC-Fighters project proudly announces the inauguration of a new modular laboratory at the International Center of the Universidad de Sevilla, located in Nervión. This represents a significant step for the development of innovative technologies for the sustainable management of phosphogypsum (PG) waste.

Hosted within the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at the University’s Physics Faculty, this laboratory will serve as a hub for cutting-edge research focused on CO₂ capture through alkaline attack on phosphogypsum. The process is based on a patented technology developed by the company CapturaCO2, S.L., and forms a central component of the FIC-Fighters project.

The research team – led by Dr. Luís Esquívias Fedriani, and including Dr. Aurora Romero García, Dr. Victor Morales Flórez, and Adrián Pavón Duarte – will carry out process optimisation in preparation for the construction of a pilot plant at the same location.

This modular facility and the research it supports are critical to the overall goals of the FIC-Fighters project, which aims to transform phosphogypsum waste into valuable raw materials. By combining advanced material science, patented chemical processes, and real-world pilot applications, the project aligns with the EU’s broader Green Deal and Circular Economy strategies.

We thank the Universidad de Sevilla and all collaborators involved in making this milestone a reality. The work carried out in this lab will directly contribute to achieving Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 6–7 for waste recovery processes across six European pilot sites.
