To Fair, Inclusive, Circular and Healthy cities: Transformation of PhosphoGypsum (PG) into commercial products through sustainable and zero-waste processes

FIC-FIGHTERS is an EU-funded initiative aimed at creating sustainable economic models to manage waste that threatens our natural and cultural heritage. ๐ŸŒโ™ป๏ธ This project fosters dialogue on innovative solutions for long-standing waste accumulation issues near urban areas. ๐Ÿ™๏ธ By engaging local actors, industries, authorities, SMEs, RTD centers, and universities, ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ”ฌ we aim to scale up waste recovery processes to TRL6-7 under the principles of the circular economy. Our focus is on the valorization of phosphogypsum waste (PG) to produce sustainable raw materials for the paper, cement, batteries, fertilizers, and detergents industries. ๐Ÿ”‹๐Ÿงช Over the next 48 months, in collaboration with the CCRI, we will:

How is the FIC-FIGHTERS project transforming waste management for a sustainable future?

Build a Mobile Pilot PlantCreate a PG ForumEnhance Flexibility and ReplicabilityCreate a Promote Knowledge Exchange ForumProvide Circularity Guidelines
Demonstrate sustainable production of raw materials (sodium sulfate, REE and P, aluminum hydroxide, ammonium sulfate, and precipitated calcium carbonate) starting from PG and other wastes, using optimized results and digital twin technology. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Facilitate local discussions and workshops across 7 case studies, including citizen participation, to address socio-economic, environmental, and regulatory aspects of new circular business models. ๐Ÿ“ Facilitate local discussions and workshops across 7 case studies, including citizen participation, to address socio-economic, environmental, and regulatory aspects of new circular business models. ๐Ÿ“ Participate in clustering and CCRI events, establish a Community of Practice, and ensure project results are publicly available and exploitable, while addressing IP protection. ๐Ÿ’ผ Develop guidelines based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), social, and health and safety studies. ๐Ÿ“Š

Our objectives ๐ŸŽฏ

The overarching goal of FIC-Fighters is to demonstrate at a large scale a circular and systemic solution for the regeneration of seven local PG stacks in Europe towards more sustainable cities and urban regions, by joining key stakeholders in a unique cluster which will cooperate in a transdisciplinary way to reach a robust and efficient solution, targeting 5 economic sectors: batteries, packaging, construction & building, detergents, and fertilisers.
